Syllabus

 7th Grade Social Studies

Hello and welcome to your 7th grade year! Below is an abbreviated outline of what you can expect from this class as well as some basic expectations and a breakdown of my grading system. Also, I have provided some useful online resources. This syllabus is brief and if more information is desired, my web page goes into detail on the specifics of this class.

In social studies we will be studying four different things:
  • Ancient world history
  • World Geography: A focus on the 5 themes of geography.
  • Civics (politics and government): Comparing and contrasting various government structures.
  • Economics: Studying how different societies and individuals allocate their scarce resources.

Units We Will be Covering:
Unit 1: World Geography
Unit 2: India
Unit 3: China
Unit 4: Personal Finance
Unit 5: Rome

Classroom Expectations:

  1. Enter the classroom quietly and begin the Warm Up.

  2. During class discussions, only one person talks at a time. Raise your hand in order to share your ideas.

  3. Use your inside voice when talking to group members.

  4. Respect. Use kind words when talking to classmates or teachers. Respectfully listen to others when they are talking.

In Class:

  • Students are expected to come to class prepared with a pencil and their social studies folder every day. Their social studies folder will be provided to them and will be placed in their three ring binder.

  • Students are expected to adhere to the classroom expectations mentioned above.

  • I use a three strike rule where students will be warned twice and upon the third “strike” will be asked to attend lunch detention with myself. Here, students will write a letter to their parents/guardians explaining why they were asked to attend lunch detention and I will also send an email to the parents/guardians explaining the situation.

Grading:

  • All academic grades will be posted to PowerSchool on a weekly basis.

  • Standard Grading System: 90-100 =A, 80-89 = B, 70-79 = C, 60-69 = D, 59-50 = F

  • Students will receive a 50% deduction when they turn in an assignment late. This means that if students turn an assignment late then the best grade they can receive will be an 50%.

Homework:
If students use their class time wisely then they will not be asked to do homework. However, some students will be asked to finish classwork at home if they were unable to complete in class or if they were absent.
